Gunnison, city in Sanpete County, Utah, United States
Gunnison is a small city located in Sanpete County in central Utah. The town sits on flat ground in an agricultural valley surrounded by fields and pastures, with a compact downtown area containing shops, restaurants, and modest buildings.
Gunnison was founded in 1859 by a group led by Bishop Jacob Hutchinson and was initially called Chalk Hill Point. Brigham Young renamed it after Captain John W. Gunnison, a surveyor who died during an expedition in 1853.
Gunnison carries the name of a 19th century surveyor and reflects the pioneer heritage that shaped the area. The town displays its farming identity through the surrounding fields and how residents engage with agriculture as a central part of daily life.
The town is small and easy to navigate on foot, with convenient street parking throughout. Visitors will find basic services including grocery stores, simple restaurants, and modest lodging options within walking distance of the center.
The original settlement was relocated due to swampy conditions, and the current site was recommended by Brigham Young in 1862 on flatter, more suitable land. This move made successful agricultural development of the area possible.
