Château de Vaire

Château de Vaire is a stone castle in the village of Vaire featuring a symmetrical facade with projecting central sections and richly decorated ground-floor rooms. The grounds include two-level gardens with formally trimmed yews and walking paths through the property.

The site originally held a fortified castle dating back to the 11th century that was eventually demolished. The current building was constructed between 1713 and 1718 by architects Claude-Antoine Colombot and Jean-Pierre Gallezot to replace the earlier structure.

The building shows French classical style that was popular among wealthy families in the Paris area. The way the facade is designed and how the gardens are arranged reflects the tastes and customs of its original owners.

The castle opens to visitors during summer months with access to both the main building and the French-style gardens on the grounds. Wear sturdy footwear for the terraced garden paths and allow time to explore both areas.

The construction was partly funded by a dowry from Marie Elisabeth Yacinthe Heuslin, but this generous contribution later sparked family disputes and public conflicts over property rights. The financial disputes and their aftermath are documented in historical records from that period.
