Château de Varax

Château de Varax is a medieval castle in Saint-Paul-de-Varax with two remaining wings built from pink bricks. An artificial water feature now occupies the space where a fruit garden once stood, while the facades and roofing have protected status.

The castle was built on an artificial mound in the 13th century and experienced a Savoyard attack in 1332 during conflict with the Dauphins of Viennois. Damage from 1593 prompted reconstruction of affected sections.

The castle reflects medieval defensive design typical of the region, with local building traditions visible in its structure and materials.

The castle is private property and not open to visitors. You can view the exterior from public areas and appreciate the pink brick facades from a distance.

The castle sits atop a large artificial mound that served as the foundation for the original 13th-century fortification. This elevated base was a key defensive feature that helped control the surrounding landscape.
