Musée Thomas-Henry

The Musée Thomas-Henry is an art museum in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin displaying European paintings from the 15th through the 19th century across well-organized galleries. The collection features artists from Italy, the Netherlands, and France presented in a historic building.

A wealthy merchant named Thomas Henry founded the museum in 1835 by donating his personal art collection to the city. This generous gift of around 160 paintings and reliefs created the foundation for the institution that remains today.

The museum displays works from Italian Renaissance masters to French neoclassical painters, reflecting the artistic exchange across European schools over centuries. Visitors can observe how painting styles and techniques evolved across different periods and regions.

The museum holds early works by Jean-François Millet, a major French painter who created portraits of family members and acquaintances here. These portraits reveal a different side of the artist compared to his later famous rural scenes.
