Castle of Sommières, Medieval castle in Sommières, France
The Castle of Sommières is a medieval fortress dominated by a tall watchtower overlooking the Vidourle River and the town below. The structure preserves remains of its original defensive layout and shows how fortifications were built in this border region.
The fortress was built between the 10th and 11th centuries as a defensive stronghold at a strategic river crossing. In 1573, during religious conflicts, it suffered severe damage that permanently altered its structure.
The castle regularly hosts exhibitions and events that showcase local history and medieval craftsmanship techniques. Visitors can experience how the fortress connected to the daily lives of people living below it.
The castle is reached by footpaths and stairs, some of which are steep and require sturdy shoes. Parking is available near the town, and visitors can walk up to the site from there.
The watchtower still standing today is the sole survivor of two original towers that once fortified the castle. This remaining tower shows just how severe the damage was during the 1573 conflicts.
