Château de Rametz, Medieval castle in Saint-Waast, France

Château de Rametz is a medieval castle with a rectangular layout and four cylindrical towers at each corner, surrounded by a moat. The structure was built with orange-pink bricks and limestone accents, and contains spaces such as the kitchen, chapel, and residential areas with varying architectural elements.

The castle was originally built in the 13th century and underwent multiple reconstructions between the 16th and 19th centuries. These different periods of modification left traces in its architecture, showing how the fortress adapted over time.

The dining hall and Guard Room display decorative work created by J. Leonard in 1848, reflecting the artistic tastes of that period. These pieces show how residents chose to embellish their living spaces during the 19th century.

The castle remains private property and opens only during specific Heritage Days when visitors can explore the dungeon and chapel. Checking the opening dates beforehand is important before planning a visit.

The castle's original kitchen preserves brick barrel vaults that reveal medieval construction techniques. These spaces offer a rare glimpse into the everyday structure of fortified dwellings.
