Château Mercier

Château Mercier is an early 20th-century castle featuring a main residence with two symmetrical side wings. The property is surrounded by ornamental gardens designed with decorative water basins and structured green spaces.

The building was constructed in 1901 as a residence for a top mining company executive. It sustained damage during World War I but was later restored and adapted for different uses over time.

The building reflects the prosperity of mining industrialists who shaped this region during its economic peak. Walking through, you see how these business leaders displayed their wealth through spacious rooms and carefully maintained grounds.

The castle is located in town and currently serves as city hall, hosting municipal services and administrative offices. Visitors can view the exterior architecture and gardens, though access to interior spaces is limited since the building remains an active government facility.

The castle served as a maternity hospital from 1946 to 1970 before eventually becoming public property. This unexpected transformation connects the building's past to the social welfare efforts of the post-war period.
