Sainte-Chapelle de Riom

Sainte-Chapelle de Riom, Gothic chapel in Riom, France.

Description

Sainte-Chapelle de Riom is a Gothic chapel with a single nave divided by four bays, featuring pointed vaulted ceilings and nine large windows that fill the interior with light. The building displays the typical characteristics of late Gothic design with its slender proportions and vertical emphasis.

History

Construction of the chapel began between 1395 and 1396 under master builder Hugues Foucher and was completed in 1403. It was built as part of the residence of Jean de Berry, a powerful French nobleman of that era.

Culture

The chapel's name comes from a piece of the Cross of Christ that it houses, a distinction granted only to descendants of Saint Louis. This sacred relic made the building an important place of prayer for the local nobility.

Practical

The chapel is open to visitors during the summer months and fits well into a walking tour of Riom's historical center. It is helpful to check the opening times in advance, as these may vary depending on the season.

Did you know?

The stained glass windows were created between 1450 and 1460 under Charles I of Bourbon and represent the skilled craftsmanship of 15th-century artisans. These windows are among the most important examples of the glass-painting tradition that flourished during this period.
