Ship graveyard of Guilvinec

The Ship graveyard of Guilvinec is a collection of roughly thirty abandoned fishing boats spread along the shoreline, ranging from small wooden craft to larger vessels. The wrecks lie scattered in various states of decay, displaying the different types of boats that once worked these waters.

The boats date mainly from the 1920s through 1960, when they served as fishing vessels in the region. When the fishing industry declined, the vessels were gradually abandoned and eventually left to rest along the shore.

These vessels show how fishing shaped life in this corner of Brittany, with local crews depending on them for work and survival. The boats themselves reveal the practical knowledge passed down through families who knew these waters and built their livelihoods around the sea.

The site is located on Rue du Ménez in Guilvinec and is easy to reach, though the ground can be muddy and slippery. Wear sturdy shoes and pay attention to tide changes, as some areas flood when the water rises.

Some of the boats still bear their painted names, and their hulls create striking patterns of rust and seaweed that shift with the seasons and light. This blend of human remains and natural growth makes the site feel less like a dump and more like an unintended gallery of slow decay.
