Strutzmühle, Historic grain mill in Wies, Austria
Strutzmühle is a historic mill on the White Sulm River in Wies, featuring a three-meter water wheel and traditional grinding stones. The facility uses river water to process grain into flour and includes an on-site baking oven for immediate use.
The mill was built in the mid-1800s and still contains the original gear system from that era. It is the last remaining of 24 mills that once operated along the White Sulm valley.
The mill played a central role in the community's food production and remains a reminder of how grain processing shaped daily life in this valley. The on-site baking oven shows how flour was immediately transformed into bread.
The mill is open daily for visitors and guided tours can be arranged by calling ahead. Parking is available at the nearby Alpengasthof Strutz, making it easy to access the site.
The upper floor contains the Miller's Room, which features a bell connected directly to the mill wheel. This bell rang to alert the miller whenever grain supplies were running low.
