Drake House

Drake House is a two-story wooden structure with narrow clapboard siding, broad corner boards, and decorative trim around the doors and windows. Inside, original furniture and household items remain, showing how residents organized their daily lives.

Built in the 1890s by George Drake and his brother John in Haystack, this structure represents an earlier era of settlement in the region. The building was moved by barge to Arnold's Cove during the 1970s as communities reorganized.

The house reflects the everyday life of fishing families who inhabited this region for generations. The rooms show how people adapted their homes to the rhythms of coastal work and community ties.

The building opens during summer months with guided tours that show the interior spaces and original belongings of former residents. Visitors should expect narrow stairs and uneven floors, so sturdy footwear is recommended.

This building was physically moved from a distant settlement to prevent it from being lost forever. The relocation effort demonstrates how local communities worked to preserve tangible reminders of their past.
