Long Point, Ramsar wetland site in Norfolk County, Canada
Long Point is an expansive wetland on the northern shore of Lake Erie, composed of marshes, dunes, and beaches. This sandy spit extends approximately 40 kilometers into the lake and contains various habitats that attract thousands of bird species.
The region gained protection in 1866 when the Long Point Company was established to safeguard this spit. This organization eventually transferred large land portions to public ownership, creating one of the earliest conservation initiatives in North America.
The area functions as a hub for bird watching and nature study, where visitors can observe researchers and ornithologists working throughout the seasons. Many people come to join guided walks and learn about the migratory birds that stop here during their journeys.
Several observation towers and marked trails allow visitors to explore the various habitats throughout the wetland. The best time to visit is during migration periods in spring and fall, when bird activity is highest.
The site is home to a research station established in 1960 that has tracked migration patterns for decades. Scientists here have banded millions of birds over the years, generating vast datasets about animal movement and survival rates.
