Thun Castle, Medieval castle on Schlossberg hill in Thun, Switzerland.

Thun Castle sits on a hill above the city and is a fortified stone structure with four towers at its corners. The building now houses five floors filled with exhibitions that overlook the valley and surrounding landscape.

Duke Berthold V of Zähringen had the structure built between 1180 and 1190 to control trade routes in the region. The castle remained an important stronghold for centuries and was later used by the Bernese family.

The castle served as the administrative hub for the region, and its rooms still reflect how officials and nobility once lived and worked here. The furnishings and decoration give a sense of how powerful families arranged their homes and what objects were part of their daily lives.

The castle is easy to reach on foot from the city center since it sits directly above the town. It is best to arrive early in the day so you can explore the steep pathways at a relaxed pace and walk through the exhibitions without crowds.

The Knights' Hall retains its original medieval architecture and shows how court was held. Visitors can enter this room and see where judges and accused parties stood, giving the space a direct historical presence.
