Verbois dam, Hydroelectric power station in Aire-la-Ville, Switzerland
Verbois dam stretches 410 meters across the Rhone River and houses four Kaplan turbines to generate electricity from flowing water. The structure also functions as a road bridge, allowing vehicles to cross the river at this point while water management gates control river flow.
Construction began during the 1940s to meet growing energy demands in the region and reshape the river valley. This facility became a major power source for Geneva and marked a significant shift in how the Rhone was used.
The Services Industriels de Genève maintains this facility while implementing environmental protection measures to preserve the surrounding ecosystem and wildlife.
The site is best explored during daytime for clear views of the structure from multiple angles both above and below the dam. Access is possible from both sides of the river, and you can walk across the bridge or observe the facility from riverside areas.
The dam generates 466 gigawatt-hours annually, supplying 15 percent of the electrical consumption needs for the entire Canton of Geneva.
