Hofwil institute building, Educational institute in Münchenbuchsee, Switzerland
The Hofwil institute building is a historic school building set within the grounds of the former Hofwil castle in Münchenbuchsee, in the canton of Bern. It is built with solid stone walls and brings classrooms, residential areas, and administrative spaces together under one roof.
The institute was founded in 1817 on an existing farm estate and was one of the first schools in Switzerland to bring together students from different social backgrounds. In 1884, it was converted into a teacher training college, a role it kept well into the 20th century.
The name "Hofwil" refers to the farm estate where an open educational model was once put into practice. When walking through the grounds today, you can still see how living and learning spaces were built side by side within a single complex.
The building is in Münchenbuchsee and is easy to spot from outside, as it sits within a large open estate. Since the grounds are still in active use, it is worth checking ahead to find out which parts are open to visitors.
Since 1997, the building has housed a music school for upper secondary students, an unusual turn for a place originally built around general education. This focus on artistic training makes it stand out from most other historic school buildings in the region.
