Maison Tavel

Maison Tavel is a museum housed in a medieval building that displays maps, architectural models, and objects from Geneva's public collections. The rooms show how the structure was originally used as a residence, with exhibits arranged throughout the historic interiors.

The building was constructed in medieval times as a private residence for the Tavel family and remains one of the city's oldest houses. It was converted into a museum in the late 1980s to preserve and share the city's urban history with the public.

The house displays objects that reveal how people lived and worked in Geneva over the centuries. Furniture, crafts, and everyday items show the rhythms of daily life in the city during different periods.

The museum is open from Tuesday through Sunday and sits in the old town, easily reached on foot. Exhibits are spread across multiple levels within the historic building, so wear comfortable shoes and allow time to explore the different rooms.

The museum preserves a large-scale model from the 1800s that shows Geneva as it appeared before the city's fortifications were torn down. This detailed miniature view lets visitors see the dramatic reshaping of the urban landscape that followed.
