Merjen bridge, Historic bridge in Stalden, Switzerland
The Merjen bridge rises 150 meters above a deep gorge, connecting the hamlets of Merjen and Illas across the Mattervispa river in Stalden.
Engineer Alexandre Sarrasin designed this bridge in 1930 as his first large reinforced concrete arch structure, collaborating with architects Michel Polak and Alphonse de Kalbermatten.
The bridge holds status as a Class B Swiss cultural property, marking its regional significance within the canton of Valais architectural heritage.
Following the construction of Illasbrücke in 1959, the Merjen bridge now serves pedestrians and non-motorized traffic crossing the Mattervispa river.
The bridge features two concrete arches spanning 66.3 meters with slender vertical supports resting on smaller arches, creating an architectural pattern specific to this structure.
