Ancient Tombs at Longtou Mountain, Royal burial complex at Longtou Mountain, China.
The Ancient Tombs at Longtou Mountain form a burial site from the Balhae kingdom period, set on a wooded hillside in Jilin province, China. The site covers three separate tomb areas, each made up of stone chamber graves connected by walking paths.
The burial ground was established during the height of the Balhae kingdom, which ruled this region from the late 7th century through the early 10th century. When the kingdom collapsed, new construction at the site came to an end, leaving the graves as they were.
The tombs at Longtou Mountain were built by rulers of the Balhae kingdom, a people who drew on local traditions and neighboring influences at the same time. Walking through the stone structures, visitors can notice how different building choices sit side by side across the three burial areas.
The paths across the site run over rocky and uneven ground, so sturdy footwear with a good grip makes the walk more comfortable. Guided visits are available on site and help visitors make sense of the layout and the different tomb areas.
One of the mausolea on the hillside contains wall paintings from the 8th century, making it one of the few surviving examples of Balhae-period painting. Gold objects found there show just how elaborate royal burials could be during that period.
