Silverton, Mountain town and county seat in San Juan County, Colorado, US.
Silverton is a mountain settlement at 2835 meters (9305 feet) elevation, surrounded by 13000-foot peaks of the San Juan Mountains in western Colorado. Streets run in a grid pattern, with historic wood and brick buildings lining the main thoroughfare and residential sections climbing the hillsides.
The settlement began in 1874 during the silver mining boom and grew quickly until the market crash of 1893 changed the economy. The last mine closed in 1992, ending over a century of extraction activity.
The name came from the saying
The narrow-gauge Durango and Silverton Railroad brings visitors into town, running daily during summer season. Town council meetings happen twice a month at the hall, where locals discuss community matters.
Skiers use old mining roads as runs down steep slopes and past abandoned shafts. Some routes pass directly through tunnels that once carried ore down the mountain.
