Sandia Base, Military defense facility in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The nuclear weapons installation spans across southeastern Albuquerque at 5,394 feet elevation, adjacent to Kirtland Air Force Base.
From 1946 to 1971, Sandia Base served as the central nuclear weapons facility of the United States Department of Defense before merging with Kirtland Air Force Base.
The facility maintains a nuclear weapons training school and conducts research across multiple technical areas including weapons systems design and assembly procedures.
Visitors require advance arrangements with a Sandia employee sponsor, valid identification documents, and must obtain proper security clearance through the Badge Office.
The installation contains the Z Machine, which generates the most powerful laboratory-produced X-rays on Earth through advanced electromagnetic pulse technology.
