Albuquerque International Sunport, International airport in Albuquerque, United States.
Albuquerque International Sunport is an international commercial airport in the US state of New Mexico, spread across three runways. The terminal offers connections to North American destinations and some flights to Mexico, operated by eight airlines.
The airport began operations in 1939 and replaced private airfields that had existed in the area before. Ernest Blumenthal designed the original terminal building, which was expanded multiple times over the decades.
The building displays Southwest American design and shows artwork from New Mexico artists on walls and in waiting areas. Travelers find restaurants with regional food and shops selling pottery and jewelry made by native craftspeople.
The arrival and departure areas are located on the same level of the main terminal, which makes orientation easier for travelers. Baggage claim belts and car rental desks sit close to the exits on the lower level of the building.
The runways are shared with Kirtland Air Force Base, which sits directly to the east. Military and civilian aircraft use the same airspace, with the air base managing rescue services and firefighting for both.
