Cañon City, County seat in Fremont County, Colorado, United States.
Cañon City is a county seat in Fremont County, Colorado, situated along the Arkansas River with mountains flanking both sides of the valley. The town sits at an elevation of around 1625 meters (5330 feet) and serves as the administrative and commercial center of the region, with residential neighborhoods, shops, and public buildings lining the main streets.
The settlement emerged during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush when the first building went up in 1860 and prospectors and traders poured into the region. The riverside location made it a key trading and supply point that quickly grew into a regional hub.
The name Cañon comes from the Spanish word for canyon and refers to the town's position at the entrance to the Royal Gorge, which shapes the entire setting. Many residents work in the correctional facilities nearby, giving the town a particular economic and social character that visitors notice in daily routines.
Most shops and services are concentrated in the town center, which can be explored on foot and makes a good starting point for a walking tour. The elevation may cause visitors from lower regions to feel tired, so it helps to take time adjusting to the altitude.
In 1862, the first commercial oil well west of the Mississippi began operating north of town, producing kerosene for markets in Denver. This early petroleum production made the area a pioneer site for energy extraction in the western United States.
