Florence, Administrative city in Fremont County, Colorado, United States.
Florence is a small city in Fremont County, Colorado, located at roughly 5,180 feet (1,580 meters) along the Arkansas River with residential blocks, local shops and public facilities spread across a flat valley floor. Streets connect the older downtown core to newer housing on the edges, with views of surrounding peaks visible from most parts of town.
The town began in the 1860s as a settlement during the Colorado gold rush and quickly grew into a supply center for surrounding mining districts. It later expanded through farming and the construction of the nearby prison complex, evolving into a permanent community in southern Colorado.
Local events throughout the year bring together residents at community centers and public spaces to celebrate regional traditions and maintain social connections.
Most buildings line the main street and neighboring cross streets, making walking easy for orientation. Parking is typically available in front of shops and public buildings, so all areas remain easy to reach by car.
The city name is said to come from the daughter of a founder, though exact evidence is missing and several stories circulate in local memory. Some residents also claim it was chosen after an Italian model, but nothing confirms this conclusively.
