Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge, Wildlife refuge in Ravalli County, United States
Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge is a protected area along the Bitterroot River situated between two mountain ranges. The site contains wetlands, meadows, and forests that together provide habitat for hundreds of bird and animal species.
The area was established in 1964 as Ravalli National Wildlife Refuge and renamed in 1978 to honor Senator Lee Metcalf, a key conservation advocate in Montana. This renaming recognized his efforts to protect natural habitats throughout the region.
The refuge serves as a gathering place where visitors connect with wildlife through bird watching and seasonal nature events. People come to observe waterfowl and other animals in their natural surroundings and learn about the region's living landscapes.
Visitors can use two walking trails and a wheelchair-accessible paved path that are open during daylight hours. It helps to wear sturdy shoes and bring weather-appropriate clothing, as the terrain has changing conditions.
The refuge shelters more than 230 different bird species, making it an exceptional spot for bird watchers. This diversity results from the varied habitats across the land that attract different species throughout the year.
