Stemwinder Provincial Park

Stemwinder Provincial Park is a nature reserve along the Similkameen River near Hedley, featuring pine forests and rocky shorelines. The park provides space for camping and fishing activities within a compact natural setting.

Archaeological findings within the park, including stone artifacts and pithouse depressions, show that early First Nations communities inhabited this region. These discoveries reveal traces of ancient settlement patterns.

The area served as a gathering place for the Similkameen people of the Okanagan Nation, who established camps here and relied on the river's resources. The landscape and water were central to their daily way of life.

The park has camping areas on two levels overlooking the river, equipped with pit toilets and a hand pump for drinking water. Visitors should expect basic facilities and come prepared for simple conditions.

The park operates on an unusual honor system for camping fees: visitors can deposit payment into a vault at the entrance during the season when staff are not present. This self-registration approach allows access without on-site personnel.
