Ninstints, Archaeological site on Haida Gwaii islands, Canada

Ninstints is an archaeological site on SGang Gwaay island in Haida Gwaii featuring weathered totem poles and foundations of longhouse settlements along the rocky shoreline. The remains show how the Haida lived here for thousands of years, building homes and creating spiritual artworks.

The site was inhabited by the Haida for over ten thousand years before the community moved to Skidegate in 1878. This relocation was tied to the arrival of European trading ships and the diseases they brought.

The carvings on the totem poles show family connections, social rank, and relationships with the forest and sea. You can see how these works continue to serve as an expression of Haida identity and pride today.

Reaching this remote location requires a boat or seaplane from Prince Rupert or other northwestern ports. The journey takes several hours and is only possible in good weather, so flexibility with plans is important.

The site is staffed by Haida Watchmen who serve as guardians and guides, sharing stories and knowledge about their ancestors with visitors. This presence transforms each visit into a personal encounter with living heritage.
