History
Congress approved plans for the dam in 1962, and construction followed over the next decade. The original town of Kaw was flooded to create the lake, with the project reaching completion in the mid-1970s.

Bald eagles gather here during winter months to hunt fish and rest on the lake. Their presence draws photographers and wildlife watchers to the shorelines.
Practical
The lake offers nine recreation areas with multiple boat ramps and two marinas for water activities. Visitors will find over 300 camping sites with water and electrical hookups spread around the shoreline.
