Bu Maher Fort, Stone fortress in Halat Bu Maher, Bahrain
Bu Maher is a rectangular stone fortress with four circular towers located on the northern edge of the Bahrain archipelago. The structure rises about 2.2 meters above the water and anchors the historic Pearling Path.
The fortress was built in 1840 by Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Khalifa as a defensive position for the maritime region. During conflicts between Bahrain and Qatar, British warships destroyed it in 1868.
The fortress marks the starting point of the Pearling Path, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that documents Bahrain's maritime pearl trading history. The site shows how crucial this commerce was to the region's development.
The fortress sits on an island and is only accessible by boat from the Bahrain National Museum. Visitors should expect variable weather conditions and limited time at the site, so planning ahead is helpful.
Archaeological excavations at the site indicate human occupation dating back to the Umayyad or early Abbasid period. These early layers show that the region held importance long before the fortress was built.
