Muharraq Governorate

Muharraq Governorate extends over 66.74 square kilometers, incorporating Muharraq Island, Al Hadd municipality, and several neighboring islets in the Persian Gulf.

The region changed control from Portuguese occupation in 1521 to Persian rule in 1602, before finally becoming part of the Al Khalifah dynasty in 1783.

The districts of Muharraq maintain distinct Sunni communities, with Fareej Al Bin Ali representing the largest neighborhood established by the Al Bin Ali tribe.

The governorate connects to mainland Bahrain through a 2.5-kilometer causeway, enabling daily commutes between Muharraq and the capital city of Manama.

Former villages preserve their Christian heritage through names like Al-Dair meaning monastery and Qalali referring to monk residences from the 5th century.
