Arad Fort, 15th century fort in Arad, Bahrain
Arad Fort is a 15th century fortress with a square layout and cylindrical towers at each corner. The structure is surrounded by a trench that once held water from local wells.
The fort was built in the 15th century as a strategic defense position. Portuguese forces documented it on their 1635 maps, showing its importance for controlling sea routes.
The structure shows military Islamic architecture with specialized shooting positions that have nose-shaped openings along the upper defensive walls. These openings allowed defenders to respond to attacks while staying protected from enemy fire.
The fort is accessible and located near Bahrain International Airport. Visitors should plan for heat and wear comfortable shoes to explore the site easily.
Between 1984 and 1987, the fort underwent complete restoration using only traditional materials such as sea stones, lime, sand, and palm wood. This reconstruction preserved the historic construction method and original appearance.
