Khamis Mosque, Ancient mosque in Bilad Al Qadim, Bahrain.
Khamis Mosque is a place of worship with two identical twin minarets in Bilad Al Qadim, Bahrain. Its interior features a rectangular prayer hall supported by wooden columns and masonry piers, with a limestone mihrab carved with Quranic verses.
The structure was built in the 7th century during the Umayyad period. The twin minarets were added later during major renovations in the 14th and 15th centuries.
The mosque takes its name from a Thursday market that operated here for centuries as a gathering place. This location served as a center where merchants and residents came together regularly.
The site opens daily from 9 AM to 5 PM, though it closes on Fridays. It sits along Sheikh Salman Highway, making it accessible to visitors arriving by car.
The limestone mihrab was discovered during restoration work and contains inscribed Quranic verses carved in calligraphy. The engravings come from verses 34-35 of Surah 21 and reveal the craftsmanship of earlier artisans.
