King Fahd Causeway, International bridge between Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia and Al Jasra, Bahrain
The King Fahd Causeway is an international road bridge between Al Khobar in Saudi Arabia and Al Jasra in Bahrain, stretching roughly 25 kilometers across the Gulf of Bahrain. The construction rests on more than 500 concrete supports and connects both countries through several artificial islands that house border stations and rest stops.
Construction began in July 1981 following an agreement between both kingdoms and continued until the official opening in November 1986. Since then, the structure has connected two states by land and fundamentally changed trade and travel across the region.
Middle Island offers a rest stop with palm trees and pavilions where travelers pause between the two countries for a moment. Saudi and Bahraini influences merge here in the food and the design of the resting areas.
Border processing can take longer depending on traffic and time of day, so traveling outside peak hours helps reduce waiting times. All vehicles pass through customs and immigration checks at the artificial islands along the route.
The artificial islands along the route serve not only as border posts but also offer one of the few opportunities to stop in the middle of the gulf and take photographs. On some days you can see dolphins swimming past in the shallow waters from here.
