Shaikh Isa Causeway

The Shaikh Isa Causeway is a road bridge spanning the water to connect Busaiteen with the Diplomatic Area near Bahrain Bay. The roadway has multiple traffic lanes and carries thousands of vehicles daily between the islands.

The causeway opened in 1997 and was built to ease traffic congestion between Muharraq Island and the main Bahrain Island. It solved a transportation problem that had affected travel between the two islands for years.

The causeway bears the name of Shaikh Isa bin Salman al-Khalifa, the former emir, and its white triangular columns are designed to resemble traditional sailing vessels once common in these waters. This architectural choice connects the modern crossing to Bahrain's seafaring heritage.

The bridge can get very busy during peak hours, especially in early morning and late afternoon. It is best to plan your crossing time flexibly or avoid these times if possible.

Bahrain Post issued a special stamp at the causeway's opening in 1997 to commemorate this milestone in national development. This philatelic piece is now a collectible that reflects how much the crossing meant to the country.
