Al-Sakhir Palace, Royal residence in Sakhir, Bahrain
Al-Sakhir Palace is a royal residence set in the desert landscape west of Manama. The building displays traditional Islamic design with large arches, columns, and a minaret, surrounded by extensive gardens and located near a working camel farm.
The building was established in the early 20th century as a residential seat and served as a meeting place for nobles and political leaders. After that era ended, it remained closed and unoccupied for many years.
The palace maintains a 40-foot majlis, demonstrating the traditional Arab custom of hosting formal gatherings and ceremonies within royal residences.
The residence sits northeast of the racing circuit, accessible from the Zallaq Highway. Visitors should keep in mind that this is a historic site in a desert setting, so proper preparation for the local conditions is advisable.
Following Sheikh Hamad's death in 1942, the palace remained locked and uninhabited for many years as a sign of respect for the ruler.
