Bahrain National Stadium, Main sports stadium in Riffa, Bahrain

Bahrain National Stadium is the national stadium of Bahrain, located in Riffa near the traffic directorate. It holds 24,000 spectators and is used mainly for football. The stadium also contains a large indoor sports hall open to the public on a subscription basis, and its position near the schools and university district makes it easy to reach from the surrounding roads.

The stadium was built and opened in 1982 in Riffa. Its facilities were renovated in 2012 ahead of the 21st Arabian Gulf Cup. National Day celebrations were held there for years, and the coronation of King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa as king of Bahrain took place in the stadium. On 5 November 2022 Pope Francis led a papal mass there, the first by a pope in Bahrain.

On 5 November 2022 Pope Francis celebrated the first papal mass ever held in Bahrain at the stadium, which was temporarily refitted with a central stage for the Pope and King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. About 30,000 people of 111 nationalities attended, most from Asian communities. National Day celebrations were long held here, and the stadium also hosted the ceremonies proclaiming Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa king.

The stadium sits in Riffa near the traffic directorate, close to the schools district and the university, and is reached by the surrounding streets. A large gym hall is open to the public on a subscription basis. Temporary refitting for events such as the 2022 papal mass changed the layout, so check arrangements before travelling.

The venue hosted multiple Gulf Cup tournaments and serves as the home ground for Bahrain's national football team. It is where the country's most important sporting moments take place.
