Bellapais Abbey, Gothic monastery in Kyrenia, Cyprus
The Bellapais Abbey stands at 352 meters above sea level, featuring white limestone walls, Gothic arches, and a preserved refectory from medieval times.
The monastery began as a refuge for Augustinian monks who fled Jerusalem in 1187, later changing affiliation to the Premonstratensian Order in the thirteenth century.
The monastery holds regular classical music performances in its refectory hall, maintaining a centuries-old tradition of religious and artistic expression.
Visitors can reach the abbey by following the mountain road from Kyrenia, with guided tours available in multiple languages from 9 AM to 5 PM.
The monastery contains a massive fig tree at its entrance, which has grown through centuries witnessing the transformation from active religious center to cultural monument.
