Bellapais Abbey, Gothic monastery in Kyrenia, Cyprus

Bellapais Abbey is a Gothic monastery set on a hillside above Kyrenia featuring limestone walls and pointed arches characteristic of medieval religious architecture. The main structures include a church, a covered walkway around an open courtyard, and a dining hall where monks once shared their meals.

The monastery was founded in 1187 when Augustinian monks fled Jerusalem and established themselves in this location. The community later joined the Premonstratensian Order in the 1200s, reshaping its religious practices and structure.

The monastery reflects its religious roots in the layout of its spaces, where monks once moved between the church, refectory, and cloister following a daily rhythm. Visitors walking through can still sense how this place was organized around communal prayer and shared meals.

The site is built on sloping terrain with multiple levels and staircases, so comfortable shoes and unhurried time are essential for exploring. Early morning or late afternoon visits offer better lighting and fewer crowds, making it easier to move around and take in the details.

A large fig tree stands near the main entrance, having grown for centuries and witnessed the transformation of the monastery from an active religious community to a place visitors explore today. The tree provides shade and stands as a living reminder of the long history contained within these walls.
