Morne Negres Marrons

Morne Negres Marrons is a summit rising from dense tropical forests that form part of Dominica's central mountain range, featuring steep slopes and multiple hiking trails. The route passes through varying elevations and diverse vegetation that shifts noticeably as you climb.

The mountain's name originates from Maroon communities, formerly enslaved Africans who established settlements in Dominica's mountainous interior during colonial times. These highland regions became refuges for people seeking freedom and independence.

The mountain paths, including the notable Jacko Steps, connect to the legacy of Chief Jacko, who led resistance movements through these terrains. Visitors can walk these historic routes today and sense how the place is woven into stories of resistance and survival.

The ascent follows Segment 5 of the Waitukubuli National Trail and requires proper hiking equipment and good physical fitness. It is recommended to hire local guides, as the paths are demanding and weather conditions can change rapidly.

The mountain lies near the Layou River, where varying elevations create distinct microclimates that support rare plant species. This ecological diversity makes the location particularly rewarding for nature observers, as climbers pass through continuously shifting habitats during their ascent.
