Trifinio Fraternidad biosphere reserve, Transboundary biosphere reserve at the borders of Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, Central America
Trifinio Fraternidad is a protected area spanning the borders of Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador with cloud forests in higher elevations, mixed pine-oak forests at middle altitudes, and drier forests at lower elevations. The elevation changes create distinct zones where different plants and animals live.
The area began as separate protected zones in different countries before UNESCO recognized it as a transboundary biosphere reserve in 2011. This designation unified the different conservation efforts under one international framework.
Local communities practice traditional farming and work together across borders to protect the forests and wildlife. This shared responsibility shapes daily life in the region and connects people from three different nations.
The dry season from November to April offers the best conditions for visiting, with easier trails and more stable weather. Different areas require different levels of fitness, so plan your hike based on your abilities.
The area serves as critical habitat for rare animals like anteaters and spider monkeys that live across the different forest types. These creatures are hard to spot, but their presence shows how biologically rich this place truly is.
