Sam Ratulangi International Airport, International airport in Manado City, Indonesia
Sam Ratulangi International Airport is a commercial aviation facility in Manado with a 2,650-meter runway able to handle large jets at 81 meters elevation. The terminal building contains multiple check-in counters and gates designed to process high volumes of passengers, along with standard facilities for baggage handling and aircraft servicing.
The facility began in 1942 when Japanese military built a 700-meter runway called Mapanget Airfield. It underwent several name changes and modifications during the Permesta rebellion before becoming the international hub it is today.
The terminal displays traditional North Sulawesi architecture and houses local shops selling regional products like Minahasan textiles and Klappertaart pastries. Visitors can browse these items while moving through the building, connecting directly with the region's crafts and flavors.
The airport offers access via Damri buses and metered taxis that run to central Manado. Arriving early is advisable for domestic flights, and using the signage throughout the terminals helps with navigation during check-in and boarding.
The airport serves as the primary gateway to Bunaken National Marine Park and functions as one of Indonesia's eleven designated main entry ports for international visitors. This makes it a jump-off point for divers and marine enthusiasts wanting to explore the region's coral reefs and ocean ecosystems.
