Kualanamu International Airport, International airport in Deli Serdang, Indonesia.
Kualanamu International Airport is an international airport in Deli Serdang on the island of Sumatra serving major and regional carriers. The passenger area spans two levels with check-in counters, waiting zones, and shops beneath a high roof.
Planning for this airport began in the early 1990s to replace the old Polonia airport, which could no longer be expanded. After several delays, the facility entered operation in July 2013 and took over all commercial flights for North Sumatra.
The terminal displays traditional Batak architectural elements on its facade and interior spaces that recall the culture of North Sumatra. Travelers encounter artisan representations and motifs on the walls that make regional heritage visible.
A rail connection runs regularly between the airport and downtown Medan, supplemented by highway access and taxi stands. Travelers should allow between 45 minutes and an hour for the journey into the city depending on traffic.
As the first airport in Indonesia, it received a four-star rating from Skytrax in June 2015 for service quality and facilities. The rating sets the facility apart from other airports in the country and draws international attention to North Sumatra.
