Kempt Tower, Martello tower in Saint Ouen, Jersey
Kempt Tower is a granite fortification built in the 1800s that stands at the edge of Saint Ouen's Bay, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The structure was originally equipped with heavy guns and formed part of a broader defensive system protecting the island's coastline.
Built in 1834 when tensions between Britain and France were high, the tower became less important for military purposes as naval technology advanced. It eventually transitioned from defense to residential use over the following decades.
The tower is named after General Sir James Kempt and represents Jersey's role in British coastal defense during a period of international tension. It shows how the island was strategically positioned to protect British interests in the Channel.
The tower now serves as vacation rental accommodation with modern facilities inside for groups of visitors. Access is on foot, and the location sits within a protected natural area where visitors can explore nearby trails and coastal landscapes.
The tower can be entered via its roof terrace, which offers sweeping views across Saint Ouen's Bay and the surrounding nature reserve. This elevated access gives visitors a vista that many passing by from outside would not expect to discover.
