Battery Moltke, German artillery fortification in Saint Ouen, Jersey.
Battery Moltke is a German artillery fortification on the coastal heathland of Les Landes in northern Jersey. The complex contains multiple concrete bunkers, gun emplacements, and an observation tower that were positioned to defend this section of the island's shore.
Construction began in 1941 under the Organisation Todt and the battery was armed with four captured French 155mm cannons instead of the German naval guns initially intended. The use of French weapons reflected the military resources available to occupying forces on the island.
The site represents a chapter of Jersey's wartime experience and how military structures became embedded in the island's landscape. Today, the preserved bunkers and gun positions tell the story of occupation life along this coastal stretch.
The exterior areas and gun positions are open for exploration throughout the year without major seasonal restrictions. There is parking on-site and bus route 8 from Liberation Station provides convenient access to the battery.
One recovered French cannon remains visible at Gun Position Four while three others rest at the base of the nearby cliffs. This contrast reveals how this coastal location experienced the violence and destruction of the occupation years.
