Bong County, Administrative county in central Liberia
Bong County is an administrative county in the north-central region of Liberia, organized into twelve districts and extending to the border with Guinea. A major paved road runs through the county, linking Monrovia with Sanniquellie and connecting various settlements across the region.
The county was established in 1964 during Liberia's administrative restructuring of its territorial divisions. It later became strategically significant during the civil conflicts that affected the country in the 1990s.
The region is home to Kpelle, Mandingo, and Mano communities, each speaking their own languages and maintaining distinct traditions in daily life. These different groups have shaped the local customs and social practices you see throughout the area.
Travel through the area is easiest along the main road connecting Monrovia and Sanniquellie, which handles most regional traffic. Road conditions vary depending on which districts you plan to visit, so adjusting your plans accordingly will help.
The county holds substantial iron ore deposits that have been exploited for economic purposes over many years. The county's flag displays colors and symbols that reflect this mining heritage.
