Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, Basilica in Rome, Italy
Santa Maria Maggiore is one of the four Papal basilicas in Rome.
The basilica was built in the 5th century during the reign of Pope Sixtus III.
It houses important early Christian art, including a series of mosaics dating back to the 5th and 13th centuries.
The basilica is open daily for visitors and admission is free.
It's the only Roman basilica that retained the core of its original structure, surviving the many reconstructions of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
