Millennium Tower, Office skyscraper in Brigittenau, Vienna, Austria
Millennium Tower is a 50-story skyscraper of glass and steel that rises along the Danube riverbank in northern Vienna. The building houses office spaces, a shopping center, restaurants, and a multiplex cinema all within its structure.
Built from 1997 to 1999 by developer Georg Stumpf, the tower was approved for 120 to 140 metres but was actually raised to 202 metres including its roof structure, and its shopping centre was built at 30,000 m² instead of the permitted 10,000 m². Vienna's authorities approved these deviations retroactively despite protests from the Greens. Stumpf sold the tower and Millennium City to MPC Capital on 25 July 2003 for 360 million euros.
The tower's name refers to the third millennium, for which it was completed in 1999. Its lower two levels are open to the public and hold the Millennium City shopping centre, restaurants and a multiplex cinema, so the building works as a shopping and leisure address as well as an office block.
The publicly accessible area reaches up to the 2nd floor and holds the Millennium City shopping centre, restaurants and a Cineplexx multiplex cinema. The office floors above are not open to visitors. The tower stands at Handelskai 94–96 in Brigittenau, beside the Danube and near a metal truss bridge.
The construction proceeded at an exceptional rate of 2.5 floors per week, demonstrating advanced building techniques in late 1990s European architecture.
