Mörbisch am See, municipality in Eisenstadt-Umgebung District, Burgenland, Austria
Mörbisch am See is a small municipality on the western shore of Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland. The village features traditional courtyard lanes with historic houses, some displaying distinctive covered staircases, which have been part of a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2003.
The region was first settled by Neolithic peoples around 7,000 years ago, and later the Romans used the local quarry at St. Margarethen. The town was first recorded in 1254 and remained under Hungarian control until 1921, shaping its name and cultural identity.
The name Mörbisch comes from Hungarian origins, reflecting centuries when the region was closely linked to that culture. The traditional courtyard lanes with their distinctive covered staircases show how residents organized their homes and daily lives within a tight community structure.
The village sits at only about 118 meters (390 feet) above sea level and is easily accessible. Extensive cycling and walking paths surround the area, along with a harbor offering ferry connections across the lake and water sports options like sailing and windsurfing.
The village has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2003 for its distinctive courtyard lane structure, typical of the Seewinkel region. Every summer the Seefestspiele Mörbisch takes place here, an international operetta festival featuring a floating stage on Lake Neusiedl.
