Landhaus, Graz

Landhaus, Graz, Renaissance parliament building in Innere Stadt, Graz, Austria.

The Landhaus is a Renaissance building featuring three stories of balustraded galleries with ornate arches connected by a raised walkway in its central courtyard. The complex also contains a Baroque assembly hall with carved doors depicting historical events from the Styrian region.

Built in the 1550s under Habsburg rule, the building served as the meeting place for the Styrian Diet. This assembly governed territories across Austria, Slovenia, and Italy.

The Knight's Hall displays a richly decorated stucco ceiling featuring zodiac signs and natural elements that show Renaissance artistic tastes. The ornamental details reveal how local leaders once connected art with knowledge and power.

The building continues to serve as the seat of the provincial parliament and offers guided tours for visitors interested in exploring its rooms. Check at the entrances about current visiting conditions, as it remains an active government building.

The exterior displays Venetian-style loggias and arched windows that reveal southern European influence on the local architecture. This stylistic choice was uncommon for Austrian buildings of that era.
