Tulln an der Donau

Tulln is a town on the Danube River in northwestern Lower Austria, roughly 40 km from Vienna. The town spreads across the Tulln Basin and features parks, a water facility, and gardens that invite walks and leisure activities.

The settlement started as a Roman fort called Comagena that guarded the Danube frontier. After the Roman period ended, the place grew into a trading center and continued to develop as an important local hub.

The name comes from the Roman settlement of Comagena, a reminder of the town's ancient roots along the river. Walking through the old town, you see buildings from different periods standing side by side, reflecting how the community developed over time.

Start at the tourist office on Minoritenplatz for directions and advice about parks, the water facility, and places to stay. The town is flat and easy to explore on foot, with signposted paths and calm streets perfect for wandering.

The town features a distinctive fountain depicting a legendary scene from the Nibelungen tale that many visitors overlook at first glance. This artwork shows how regional history and myth are woven into the town's identity and public spaces.
