Justice Centre Leoben

The Justice Centre Leoben combines a courthouse and detention facility in a single modern structure made of glass and concrete. Natural light fills the interior spaces, creating an open feel within a building designed for serious purposes.

Architect Josef Hohensinn completed this combined courthouse and prison complex in 2004, marking a shift in how correctional facilities were designed. The project set new standards for European prison architecture.

The building displays inscriptions from the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which visitors can see as they move through the spaces. These texts shape how people experience the place and its purpose.

The facility is located in central Leoben and can be reached easily by public transport. Visitors should plan ahead since access to certain areas may be limited.

Each detention cell includes a private kitchenette, an uncommon feature in European prison design. This allows inmates to maintain some control over their daily routines.
