Justice Centre Leoben, Modern justice center in Leoben, Austria
The Justice Centre Leoben is a court and prison complex at Dr. Hanns Groß-Straße 7, designed by architect Josef Hohensinn and completed in November 2004. It houses the regional court, district court, public prosecutor's office and the Leoben correctional institution in one complex. Two inscriptions on the prison perimeter quote the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
Architect Josef Hohensinn completed this combined courthouse and prison complex in 2004, marking a shift in how correctional facilities were designed. The project set new standards for European prison architecture.
Two inscriptions run along the prison's perimeter: "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights," from the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and a second on the humane treatment of persons deprived of liberty. Jim Lewis of The New York Times noted the design became a European model, while in the US it circulated in mocking blog posts often misidentifying it as a Chicago corrections center.
The complex stands at Dr. Hanns Groß-Straße 7, north of Leoben's old town on the left bank of the Mur. The courthouse and the attached prison are separate units, so visitors with court business should head for the office building rather than the detention wing.
The prison's perimeter carries two inscriptions: "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights" from the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and a second line on the humane treatment of persons deprived of liberty. Jim Lewis of The New York Times noted the design became a European model, while US coverage often misidentified it as a corrections center outside Chicago.
