Schafreuter, Mountain summit in Karwendel Range, Germany and Austria
Schafreuter is a mountain summit in the Karwendel Range straddling the border between Bavaria and Tyrol at approximately 2,100 meters elevation. The peak features steep rock faces and scree fields on one side with alpine meadows on the other.
During the 18th century, the mountain served as a navigation landmark for merchants transporting salt between Bavaria and Tirol. The route through the Rißtal valley became an important commercial passage connecting the two regions.
Local mountaineering clubs from both Bavaria and Tyrol organize regular group expeditions to maintain the cross-border hiking traditions.
Hikers should begin from the Rißtal parking area and follow marked trails through forest and rocky sections, taking about four hours to reach the summit. The best season for climbing is June through September when snow clears and trails are passable.
The two sides of the mountain display different rock formations: the northern side features limestone while the southern side shows dolomite structures. This geological boundary makes the peak noteworthy for rock enthusiasts and nature observers.
